Accessibility statement for the Imperial Commemoration Day 2026 Website
This accessibility statement applies to the Commemoration Day 2026 website.
This website is run by Imperial College London Graduation Events team. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts.
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen.
- navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software.
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
Imperial College London Graduation team is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.2 AA standard.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
- On all tested pages, there are alternative texts for decorative elements; examples are ‘Imperial’ footer logo image contains the word “logo”. Commemoration Day 2026 - Images within the ‘About the day’ section contain the alternative text “image”, while the ‘Inside the Royal Albert Hall’ and ‘Share your day’ images contain unnecessary alternative text. Alumni community - Decorative images within the ‘Alumni community’ and ‘So, where do you start?’ sections also contain alternative text This is unnecessary and fails WCAG 2.2 AA 1.1.1 Non-text content criterion. We will mark all “decorative” images accordingly, so that the screen reader users will not need to waste time on these images by November 2026.
- Globally (except on the ‘Memories of Commemoration Day 2026’ page), adjacent image and text links within the ‘Explore more’ section are not correctly combined into a single link, with the images containing alternative text. This results in unnecessary auditory overhead when navigating to these links with a screen reader. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 1.1.1 non-text content criterion. We will make sure the text links and associated linked images are combined within the DOM. Images will have null alt attributes in this instance. This will be completed by November 2026.
- Several contrast issues are present within the ‘Commemoration Day 2026’ page. These include: 1-After submitting a name search, the found text copy has a low contrast ratio, 2- Numerical copy that renders on a white background has a contrast ratio. 3- Copy that renders over the hero imagery varies in contrast, and although is classed as large text, it often has a contrast ratio below 3:1. Insufficient contrast can make content difficult or impossible to read for users with low vision, colour vision deficiencies, or reduced contrast sensitivity. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 1.4.3 Contrast (minimum) criterion. We will make sure all parts meet minimum WCAG ratio by November 2026.
- When viewing the page at 1280px width, 1024px height, and 400% zoom, content is not available or disappears when content has reflowed. Examples: 1- Global - the ‘Cookie settings’ button renders over the 'Alumni community' and 'Memories of Commemoration Day 2026' navigation menu copy. Commemoration Day 2026 - unable to see the names of graduating students when selecting the 'View or hide' buttons. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 1.4.10 Reflow criterion. We will make sure that, at zoom up to 400%, no parts of the content require two-dimensional scrolling -except for parts of content where two-dimensional scrolling is required for usage or meaning-, and all content will remain available on the page. This will be completed by November 2026.
- On the Commemoration Day 2026 (including ceremony guides) page, when navigating through the page using the keyboard, tabbing does not reach all the page content. Also, After the “View your ceremony guide for Wednesday 21 October” sections, keyboard focus moves back to the top of the page. As a result, the bottom half of the page, including information and interactive elements, cannot be reached using the keyboard. In addition to these, Globally, JAWS and macOS VoiceOver users are unable to access or select any of the navigation menu options within the ‘Explore more’ dropdown, rendering these options inaccessible. Specific to the ‘Commemoration Day 2026’ page, JAWS and macOS VoiceOver users are unable to access the user interface components within the Cookie notice when initially navigating to the page/site. This affects keyboard-only users as well as speech to text and screen reader users and fails WCAG 2.2 AA 2.1.1 Keyboard criterion. We will make sure all parts are accessible with keyboard only access, without any traps. This will be completed by November 2026.
- There are several focus order issues: 1- When tabbing to the footer content across the pages, the user is focused to the 'Imperial's Sustainable Food and Drink Policy' link within the 'View sustainability message' accordion section when it has not been expanded. 2- Commemoration Day 2026 - After submitting a search for a graduating student, the user is not focused to the results. Instead, they are returned to the top of the page. 3- Memories of Commemoration Day 2026 - Users are moved to additional media modal content at the bottom of the page that is not visually present. This results in users being focused on content that they cannot see on screen. This causes confusion. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 2.4.3 Focus Order criterion. We will correct these focus order issues by November 2026.
- Status messages, such as form submission confirmations, are not announced by screen readers. Examples are: 1- When submitting a search across all tested pages, users are not informed of how many results have been returned. 2- Commemoration Day 2026 - Users are not informed when additional content becomes available when interacting with the ‘Expand text’ button in the ‘Dean's welcome’ section, selecting the ‘Choose a ceremony’ toggles, or selecting the tabs in the ‘Order of procession’ section. 3- About graduation and Imperial - Users are not informed when additional content becomes available after selecting the ‘Read more’ arrow button. Supportive tech Users may not be aware that additional content has become available and may therefore miss important information This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 4.1.3 Status messages criterion. We will correct this issue by November 2026.
- When tabbing the pages, a visible tab focus indicator is not present. Whilst navigating the ‘Memories of Commemoration Day 2026’ page with a keyboard (Tab key), focused images briefly pulsate once and then disappear. There is no persistent visual indicator showing which image currently holds focus. This may cause confusion, unnecessary tabbing and difficulty for users. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 2.4.7 Focus Visible criterion. We will make sure a visible indicator is present on all pages to highlight the element in focus for any keyboard operable user interface components. And it will have a clear contrast of at least 3:1 against the site background. Also, the focus indicator will remain permanently visible for the entire duration that the image has focus. It will only disappear when the user moves focus to another element. This will be completed by November 2026.
- When navigating backwards (Shift + Tab) through the "Names of graduating students" list on the Commemoration Day 2026’ page, the focus indicator for the "Share" buttons is completely hidden behind a fixed-position header component. When a component is hidden behind fixed page elements, keyboard-only users cannot see what they are currently interacting with. This makes it incredibly difficult to track page position and risks accidental activation of hidden controls. This fails 2.4.11 Focus Not Obscured criterion. We will remedy this issue by November 2026.
- MOBILE ONLY: There are parts that the tabbing order is not logical: When navigating the pages using TalkBack, VoiceOver (Mobile ScreenReader), an additional “Cookies” link receives focus. However, the link is non-functional and does not provide any action when activated. As the link receives focus but does not perform an action, users may be unsure whether they have encountered a usable control or whether something has gone wrong, making navigation less predictable and efficient. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 2.4.3 Focus order criterion. We will correct this and make sure on the mobile version the focus order is correct and consistent. This will be completed by November 2026.
- MOBILE ONLY: When navigating the site using a screen reader, the “Explore More” section within the navigation is not announced consistently. 1- When using TalkBack (Android Mobile screen reader), the “Explore More” section is announced twice. 2- When using VoiceOver (iOS Mobile Screen reader) the “Explore More” section is not announced at all. This means the information provided to screen reader users does not accurately reflect the content available within the navigation. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value criterion. We will make sure the navigation menu is announced correctly to the screen reader users on mobile devices. This will be completed by November 2026.
- MOBILE ONLY: When navigating the Alumni community page using TalkBack (mobile screen reader), the page tabs can receive focus but are positioned outside of the visible focus area. As a result, the focused tab is not fully visible on screen when it receives focus. This affects TalkBack users who navigate the page using a screen reader. When the focused tab is not visible, users may be unable to see which control currently has focus, making it more difficult to understand their position on the page and interact with the available tabs. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 2.4.11 Focus Not obscured criterion. We will make sure no focused element is obscured. This work will be completed by November 2026.
- Several user interface components are found to have accessible names that do not match or start with the visually displayed name. As a result, users of speech recognition software may be unable to activate controls using their visible labels, as the spoken command may not match the programmatically determined name. This fails WCAG 2.2 AA 2.5.3 Label in Name criterion. We will make sure that the labels for user interface components will match the visually displayed names by November 2026.

PDFs and other documents
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.
Live video
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are working on the findings of our latest accessibility testing and are aiming to resolve all issues listed under non-compliance section above. Should you discover any further non-compliances on this website please contact us on: graduation@imperial.ac.uk we will endeavour to resolve them as soon as possible.
